Technically, I’ve been blogging since 2002. My blog was originally started so that I could keep family and friends informed about my progress with multiple sclerosis. I got so tired of answering “How have you been doing?” over and over.
But I haven’t really been blogging, by which I mean that I haven’t paid attention to how I organized my current blog… or even if I organized it at all. I’ve made so many of the classic newbie mistakes, and I’ve told myself I’d fix them someday.
Consider me a born-again blogger, because someday is now. I’m doing some reading so that I can take the steps to turn my blog into a real blog. To do that, I’ll need to accept a LOSS and change my approach.
What does LOSS stand for, you ask?
- Layout: Time to make — and keep — a consistent format. I used to change it every few months when I got bored. Now it’s time to pick one format that improves readability and captures the readers’ attention.
- Organize: Tags? Categories? SEO? Yeah, I know they exist, I just haven’t figured out how to make them exist for me. Actually, I do know how to make them exist: Commit to organizing what I have and update my blog. Thinking about it is one thing. Now it’s time to stop procrastination and do it.
- Socialize: I’m on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc., but you’d never know by looking at my blog. It’s time to stop talking at people and start interacting.
- Schedule: To attract an audience, I need to keep the content fresh. I need to set up a posting schedule and stick to it.
Let’s see if I can turn this LOSS into a win.
